A bus accident in Haiti has left at least 38 people dead.

Around 4am Sunday morning, a bus traveling from Cap Haitien to Port-au-Prince, hit 2 people at a bus stop, killing 1.

Then while attempting to flee the accident, the speeding bus plowed into a ‘rara parade’- which is a traditional street celebration involving local musicians. This resulted in another 34 people being killed at the scene. 4 others died at the hospital and dozens suffered injuries.

After the accident, witnesses began hurling rocks at the bus and other passing vehicles – injuring more people, and tried to set the bus on fire with passengers still inside.

The driver and passengers were rescued, taken to the police station, and then released. The driver has since fled.

It is believed the driver didn’t stop after the first accident out of fear of being killed, however newly instilled President Jovenel Moise has called for an investigation into the incident, as the cause of the accident is still unknown.
