GUYANA GOV OFFICIALS ARRESTED OVER HOUSING SCAM

Former top government officials in Guyana were arrested in connection to a housing scheme.

Yesterday, several high profile members of Guyana’s main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), were arrested and detained for questioning regarding their acquisition of seaside housing lands during their time in power.

They are accused of illegally used state resources to build their luxurious homes.

In 2010, while in power, the PPP government is believed to have undervalued of a tract of sea side lands at Sparandaam District, located on the east coast of the island, for their own personal gain.

The government officials reportedly severely underpaid for house lots worth more than GUY$250 million, then spent almost the same amount to develop an exclusive area specifically for their extravagant private homes.

Arrested were former president and current Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon, and former Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud,  They were released hours later without having to post bail.

More arrests are expected as 3 others are being questioned including Lisaveta Ramotar – the daughter of former President Donald Ramotar, who is also General Manager of the Guyana Gold Board.

All in question either already have or have been offered sprawling properties in the development.

Bharrat Jagdeo – who called his arrest “a grave injustice”, acquired more wealth in office than any other Guyanese President.
