UWI PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG

he University of the West Indies and the University of Johannesburg, have established a joint Institute for Global African Studies.
Yesterday UWI Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles and Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg, Ihron Rensburg, signed a memorandum of understanding at UWI’s Cave Hill campus in Barbados.
This agreement is the first between UWI and an African university, and will focus on research and policy development for the global African world.
Of the partnership, Sir Hilary – who has a long standing relationship with the University of Johannesburg, said joining forces on issues such as economic development, entrepreneurship, and post-colonial governance, will foster a much more integrated global African world on multiple fronts.
Rensburg pointed out that the population of Africa was forecast to grow to more than 2 billion over the next 13 years, and said as it grows, leadership of the world is a key part of the work that must be undertaken by the next two generations.
While UWI Principal Eudine Barriteau said Caribbean students can benefit from African knowledge systems that can guide regional development.
