Miss Haiti was crowned first runner-up in the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Yesterday, Haiti’s Raquel Pelissier, was named first runner-up, to France’s Iris Mittenaere, who was crowned Miss Universe 2017.

Held in Manila, Philippines, Pelissier was unable to gain financial assistance from the government of Haiti – which is currently unstable, to get her to the 65th Miss Universe, so she created an internet crowd funding campaign to offset expenses.

Of her runner-up crown, Raquel Pelissier she just feels blessed to show people that Haiti is worth being in the Miss Universe pageant.

During the pageant she spoke about the strength of Haiti and how important it is for women to be themselves and make the most out of life.

The 25-year old, 5’11 model from Port-au-Prince, is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Scientific Research in Optometry and Vision, and is working on a research project on the regeneration of the optic nerve.

Raquel Pelissier is only the second Haiti to place so well in Miss Universe, following Gerthie David who was named first runner-up in 1975 Finland.
