Imprisoned Dancehall DJ Vybz Kartel is being allowed to appeal his murder conviction.

On Wednesday during a court appearance, Justice Frank Williams granted Vybz Kartel and his 3 co-accused leave to appeal their convictions and subsequent sentences.

Kartel’s attorney Thomas Tavares-Finson, confirmed the new development with the Jamaica Observer, saying Judge Williams read through all court documents and ruled that there are legitimate grounds to appeal.

Calling it “the first but critical step in the appeal process”, Tavares-Finson said it’s “a limited victory, but an important moral victory” for his client.

Skeletal arguments for the appeal are due by June 5 and attorneys must file authority by July, giving the prosecution till July 17th to file their response. Though Kartel’s attorney aims to present the appeal in September, it is highly possible it won’t be heard before the end of the year.

Kartel and his co-defendants were given life sentences in 2014 for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. If his conviction stands, Vybz Karel will not be eligible for parole for 35 years.
