5 BAHAMIANS QUALIFY FOR NCAA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

5 Bahamians have qualified for the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The list of qualifiers was released on Tuesday, which have the 5 Bahamians ­ 3 women and 2 men, representing their respective colleges.

Leading the list of Bahamian qualifiers is Devynne Charlton, a senior at Purdue University in Indiana. Charlton – who was recently named the top athlete of the Big Ten Championships for the second year in a row, qualified for 2 events – the Women’s 60m and 60m hurdles.

In the 60m hurdles, Charlton will face off against fellow Bahamian, Olympian Pedrya Seymour, who attends University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign, and both are expected to be strong medal contenders in the event.

The other Bahamian female is jumper Dannielle Gibson, a senior at Penn State – who was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week in January, and is ranked 12th in the U.S.

The two Bahamian male athletes who will compete at the NCAAs are Auburn senior Teray Smith in the
200m, and Nebraska junior Kaiwan Culmer in the triple jump.

Smith – who is ranked 14th in the country, will compete in the 200m, while Culmer goes into the men’s triple jump tied for 10th in the nation.

The NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, will take place next weekend, March 10­11, inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at Texas A&M University.

ESPN3 will stream the meet live and it will re-­air it on Sunday March 12 on ESPN2.
