A Bahamian basketballer has been named NBA Rookie of the Month.

Earlier this week, Chavano “Buddy” Hield of Grand Bahama, was awarded the title – his first honor as a professional basketball player.

The 23-year-old – who plays guard for the New Orleans Pelicans, was named the NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month, for games played in December.

For December, Hield led Western Conference rookies in scoring (10.6 points per game) and three point field goal percentage (47.8). He also ranked #1 of all NBA Rookies in three pointers with 33.

He scored in double figures in 9 of 16 games, including the final three games of month – which the Pelicans won. He also set a career high with 21 points that included 5 three pointers.

The Pelicans started the NBA season with 8 losses but now sits just a game and a half out of the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.

Sharing Rookie of the Month honors with Chavano Hield is Joel Embiid from Cameroon – who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference. In December, Embiid led all rookies in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots.
