Bailey stars again as Leverkusen move back to second

Jamaica-born Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey continued a rich vein of form as the Bundesliga club climbed back into second spot following a 2-0 win over Mainz on Sunday.

Fresh on the heels of another outstanding display in the previous week it was Bailey who once again opened the scoring. The Jamaican hammered home his eighth league goal of the season from distance after 48 minutes and Brazilian Wendell then added a penalty to put Leverkusen above Schalke on goal difference but still 16 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.

The goal was Bailey’s eighth in 13 appearances added to the wide player’s timely 5 assists. Runaway league leaders Bayern Munich thrashed Hoffenheim 5-2 at home on Saturday.

Leverkusen are above Schalke on goal difference, with Eintracht Frankfurt a point behind in fourth.

Bailey’s outstanding performances this campaign have constantly led to speculation regarding a move away from the Bundesliga club during the January transfer window. The player is said to be attracting interest from the likes of English powerhouse teams Arsenal and Chelsea. The German club has, however, reiterated the desire to keep the player until at least the summer.
