Dominica’s Olympic Committee (DOC) is sponsoring a day of Sport and Peace, to combat rising violence in the country.
Tomorrow, in observation of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the DOC has scheduled a day of activities, sports, and demonstrations in effort to raise awareness about the power of sport as a tool for social change.
The DOC has asked every national involved in or participating in sports – including the Ministry of Sport, to display a white card or wear a white shirt or arm band.
They are also being encouraged to hold a sporting activity dedicated to the theme of sport and Peace, along with the many activities already scheduled in cooperation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was created by the United Nations in 2013 in recognition of the positive influence that sports can have on the advancement of human rights, social and economic development, and empowering women and children.
First celebrated in 2014, the day is recognized across the world.
