Windies captain Jason Holder is one of five players that has been given a retainer contract across all formats in the latest move by Cricket West Indies (CWI) to improve the incentives for players to represent the region.
Under new stipulations, players will be offered contracts in three classes, which have been labelled as the All-format, Red-Ball and White-Ball categories. The selection panel will be able to offer a total of 18 contracts in total, excluding development contracts, which will be given to players yet to fully establish themselves as firm picks for starting XIs but are likely to be selected in the year ahead.
A total of 11 all-format contracts will be allowed with the rest split between red and white ball contracts. Up to four development contracts can be offered to both categories.
While the specifics of the upgraded documents were not released CWI CEO Johnny Grave claimed the new deals were not only more flexible but offered better remuneration and more benefits.
“The new retainer contracts aim to incentivise our players to play cricket for the Windies and be contracted to CWI,” Grave said.
“All the new contracts offer increased remuneration to our Windies Men’s team as well as enhanced medical and insurance policies,” he added.
“These new contracts will embrace additional terms and conditions which will set out the responsibilities of both player and CWI to each other, together with ensuring that the players are contractually bound to new and existing policies that aim to further increase standards. All future contracts for all of our professional cricketers will start on the same date, July 1st, which will become the start of our cricketing year.”
