The Saint Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA) wants to use the sport as a means to help rehabilitate prison inmates.

Newly installed SLBA President, David ‘Shakes’ Christopher pointed to the Bordelais Correctional Facility, saying there are a lot of young men there and “boxing is a good tool to create better citizens and champions out of that system”.

The SLBA plans to open a gym at the prison and the Boys Training Centre to work with youth who have had problems with the law.

Christopher said he is taking the lead from Guyana, where several boxers have come out of the Republican Gym which is inside a prison.

Christopher said “Boxing is a disciplined sport which helps people to build confidence, it teaches them to harness their energy in the right direction and it will occupy idle time in prison.

He said if young persons are enrolled in a boxing program, they can learn to be disciplined and confident.

David Christopher made the remakes on Wednesday evening during a special awards ceremony for local boxers, where he also announced the SLBA’s plans for the year.

Those include completing upgrades to the National Boxing Gymnasium, securing scholarships and training opportunities for local boxers, working with the school system to engage the nation`s youth in positive activities, and preparing of a team of boxers to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
