A chess team from University of the West Indies (Mona) has finished in second place in a prestigious international tournament.

The 4-man team represented UWI Mona at the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships that took place in Los Angeles, CA December 27-30, 2016.

Hosted in part by the U.S. Chess Federation, the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship is the foremost intercollegiate competition in the Americas.

It featured almost 60 college and university chess teams of 4 players and 2 alternates, from North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Competition was 6 rounds with a fixed roster team, and scored by team – not individual points.

UWI Mona wrapped the competition defeating both the prestigious Yale University and favored Arizona State University (ASU) respectively, accumulating a score of 2.5 points – the second best international team tally.

The 2.5 score and 2nd place ranking mirrored what past UWI Mona chess teams achieved at the Pan American Championships, in 2011, 2013, and 2014.
